Memory/ Communication impairment may be the result of a head injury, a stroke, a form of dementia, autism, etc.
Statistics show that approximately 5.2 million people in the US are living with a form of dementia called Alzheimer's Disease. It is projected that another 10 million baby boomers will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. In fact, every 71 seconds someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. One out of 150 babies born is born with a form of Autism. Autism is 4 times more likely in male than female babies. Nearly 5.1 million people in the US have some form of autism
The definition of dementia is the loss or decline in memory or cognitive skills that interfere with everyday life independence (e.g., washing, cooking, and caring for one's self) and is due to damaged brain cells from a disease, medical condition, or injury. The most common forms of Dementia are Alzheimer's Disease, Stroke (Vascular Dementia) and Parkinson's Disease.
The definition of Autism is a brain disorder that affect's the person's ability to communicate with, reason with, and/or interacts with other people. Individuals with autism generally have trouble verbally and non-verbally communicating, at social interactions to include relationships, leisure, and play activities with another person or group. Some individuals with autism may exhibit repeated body movements (hand flapping, rocking), unusual responses to people or attachments to objects, and resist any changes in routines. In some cases, aggressive and/or self-injurious behavior may be present. The three "autism spectrum disorders" are: Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder.
